CHAPTER 23

VICTORIA: WHAT’S WITH THESE PAJAMAS ANYWAY??

LEXI: WELL, THEY ARE FROM YOUR STORE…

VICTORIA: WHAT STORE?

LEXI: VICTORIA’S SECRET.

Desperately needing a shower after their long day under the sun, Victoria headed straight for the bathroom. By the time she got out of the shower, she was both completely refreshed and completely awake. She dressed for bed even though she was no longer tired, throwing on her pajamas and then one of Sophie’s robes, fastening it around her waist. It was made of a soft, thin pastel pink fabric and fell only to mid-thigh, but still was better than the leopard print shorts and tank she wore underneath. Not something she wanted her dad to see her in for sure.

Since her mind was still a muddled mess, she decided to have a nightcap. The house was dark as she crept downstairs, her parents and Sophie already tucked in bed. She expected to be alone. At the sight of Luke leaning against her kitchen counter, she jumped.

“Gosh, Luke. You scared me,” she exclaimed, pressing a hand against her rapidly beating heart.

“Sorry,” he apologized quickly, straightening from where he had been writing a note on the counter. “I guess maybe I should have knocked first.”

“Oh please,” she waved a hand dismissively. “Neither of us have knocked at each other’s doors in years.”

“True.” His brow furrowed a little as he took in her scantily clad self. “Though things are a bit different now.”

“You could say that,” she agreed awkwardly, tightening the belt around her waist. Uncomfortable under his peering eyes, she passed behind him and started going through cupboards, searching for her parents’ stash of wine. “Is that note for me?” she asked hesitantly.

“Um, yes?” At the uncertainty in his voice, she glanced over at him and he chuckled. “Can we just agree it was for either Davis girl? I wanted to let you know that I was around.”

“What are you doing here, anyway? I thought you stayed in the city during the week.”

“Usually,” he replied quietly, a sorrowful look on his face. “I guess I just didn’t feel like going home to an empty apartment today.”

Shooting him a quizzical glance over her shoulder, Victoria wondered what that meant. She also wondered if he had taken Marlene home the day before. It was none of her business, but she couldn’t help but be curious.

In a cupboard above the fridge. she finally found two bottles of wine – both red. She took the already open one out and waved it at Luke. “Would you like some?”

His eyebrows raised. “Has it been that kind of day?”

“Maybe. You?”

He grunted in assent. She grabbed two glasses and brought them over to the counter. As she poured, she was aware of Luke watching her. “I just thought it might help me relax,” she explained further. “Get some sleep.”

“Have you been having trouble sleeping?” he quizzed gently as he accepted the glass she offered.

“Some.” She took a sip. It was good wine. Sweet, just as she liked it. “Only since being here. I guess it’s weird being home again.
